Rising Taxes: How Do We Slow The Increases?

I am proud to have served on the Cheshire Town Council representing the 3rd District for six years. As the owner of DW Gem Services, LLC—a Cheshire-based business I’ve operated for six years—I bring firsthand experience in managing budgets, improving efficiencies, and driving growth. My background has shown me that responsible financial management isn’t about cuts; it’s about smart, strategic solutions that maximize value for our community.

Beyond my business and civic work, I’ve also been dedicated to service and helping others. My wife Jenifer and I founded Cheshire’s Lights of Hope, which has raised over $1.2 million for families and individuals in our town. I’m also a founding director of Hope for Our Neighbors, established in 2024 to combat home insecurity and homelessness — a pressing issue, as 21 residents are currently homeless in Cheshire.

I’m concerned that political debates often become divisive instead of focusing on real solutions. We need leaders who promote thoughtful, strategic spending—without finger-pointing or pitting one side against the other. Lowering taxes starts with council leadership setting a clear direction.

My approach is straightforward: bid out medical and other contracted services annually, thoroughly review department and BOE budgets, and explore opportunities to combine roles or subcontract— all without sacrificing quality. I also believe in creating joint meetings with BOE representatives to clearly communicate our expectations and work collaboratively toward fiscal responsibility. Investing in economic development, infrastructure, and community programs can grow our tax base and ease the burden on residents. These strategies can save money while maintaining essential services.

While rising taxes have reasons, we must find ways to slow their growth through creative solutions and hard work. I’m not comfortable with a recurring 6%+ increase each year. It’s time to explore every option for savings and growth, prioritizing innovation, transparency, and responsible fiscal management to build a stronger, more sustainable Cheshire.

Unless we accept perpetual tax increases of over 6% annually—which I do not—I believe it’s time for leadership that values fiscal responsibility and innovative solutions.

My career has always been centered on service, honesty, and trustworthiness. I am committed to working together to make Cheshire more efficient, compassionate, and prosperous for everyone.
